I started with a Canon Powershot SX500 IS in the beginning of 2014, which was a super great size to bring everywhere in the field, and the zoom was very helpful for photographing birds. For a cheap price and decent quality, I really enjoyed this camera. However, I was getting too many photos of branches instead of birds, so I decided to get a faster camera that would also increase the quality of my photos. At the end of 2016, I upgraded to a Panasonic Lumix FZ300. Though slightly bigger, the size is still incredibly convenient for carrying everywhere and also maintains a great zoom range in addition to other handy features, including burst mode to get quick continuous photos. It’s still a challenge to get the speedy birds (and it always will be no matter what camera), but I love this camera a lot and bring it everywhere I go.

I highly recommend these cameras if you’re looking for a simple yet decent camera that you can bring everywhere, and for an affordable price! I think I spent ~$250 for the Canon, and ~$500 for the Lumix, though by now I’m sure they’re cheaper and have new and improved models.
